Medicine 02:29
Time goes by, and I don't need to cry/Every second, send a kiss up to the sky/Keep you close, I drink you like a dose/Of medicine, once a day until I die/I'm a wounded tree/The air is healing me/One day I'll be the home I wanna be/I'm a 3 legged dog/The memory of my wholeness makes me smile, sometimes/But only in my sleep/The words I write are blurring on the page/My cramping hand's a slave to every stage/Your voice, your eyes/The half of me that's cauterised by flame, by pain, still struggles to believe/I am your wife/I always was, and you will always be/The steel inside of me/Time goes by, and I don't need to cry/Every second, send a kiss up to the sky
2.
I hardly saw you on our weddin day/Except for one sacred moment, when we slipped away/You held me gently, held me with your gaze/And we kissed like there was no-one else around on our weddin day I barely heard you when it was your turn to say/I do take you darlin' to be mine forever and a day/You were so handsome, on our weddin day/The most glorious man since glory began, I gotta say The crowd all around made a sound so loud that the baby cried/The smiles and the tears, the laughter and cheers I'll hear 'til the day that I die You drove to the Tower on our weddin day/'Cos we'd run out of ice, but the speeches went ahead anyway/I had a red dress and a white bouquet/And I meant every word that I whispered to you on our weddin day
3.
Gestures of anger and love/Your grace, my weakness/I weep for the trouble I made/Your life's incompleteness I used all the ballast I had/But too late, too little, too bad/My love Gestures of anger and love/I beg your forgiveness/Hand against hand, gazing up/The air has your sweetness I picture you bathed in white light/The smile in your eyes says it's all right/My love Every day, my heart rains/'Til I'm swimming in pain/Then I open my arms to the sky/You were always much bigger than I/Now you're everywhere, you are everywhere Gestures of anger and love/I play a rare guitar/Live in a house made of gold/And drive your brother's car You gave me all that I have/You made me the woman I am/My love Now you're everywhere, you are everywhere
4.
Chill was the night and the air in the van forming splinters/The bench between us piled high, no room for our fingers So I kept my hands to myself again, my stare as hard as the road The black and the white of it all in the driver's side mirror You started to tell me the story that you never finish/Like a radio station whose signal has just reached its limit In my head I'm begging you not to give up, though surely I see why you would/If I were your heart, I would beat only once every minute Without the distraction, I see once again/Your eyes as they smile into mine And the night we pulled up at The Artist Original, the fight that you stopped just in time We cleared every dance floor, we were violently proud, like a punch-drunk Bonnie and Clyde/Now we're quiet for hours, tip-toeing around/Needing each other, the treasure we found Gathered dust while we waited for the noise to die down/For our hearts to be one heart again Free forever at The Artist Original/Free together at The Artist Original
5.
Water Bearer 13:13
Water Bearer/Carry my tears away/Make a black cloud of my pain/Let it rain and rain and rain and rain
6.
Sittin' all alone, waiting' on a song/Ain't had a funny one in oh, so long/Tryin' to get high, cos' I'm feeling' mighty low/And the number of fucks given is around zero/I'm talkin' zero fucks given 25 years, filling up the page/Hoping to ascend the international stage/Writin' lots of letters, makin' phone calls/But they want somebody younger, or less fucken tall/It seems it's zero fucks given Oh the world is round, just like a big nothin' and there ain't no corners to hide I'm dealin' with the shame of playin' this game when all I stand to lose is my foolish pride I feel I am made of vapour and lies/The mirror is cruel but I'll continue to try/And go on livin' while the promise is there/That one day I'll wake, and find that I care/'Til then it's zero fucks given

about

I have written these songs to honour my husband, whose loss is unfathomable. I want to share some of my feelings, to illuminate the depths and try to answer a few of my own questions as well as those you may have. Writing has helped me to begin healing and perhaps you will find something here to wrap your poor sad heart in too. Much love, Sarah, Clifton Springs, October 2019.
