about
Ex-Melbourne, now Bellarine Peninsula-based singer-songwriter and roots-music luminary Sarah Carroll, known for her work with the likes of GIT, The Pirates Of Beer, Soft Gold, The Left Wing, The Junes and The Cartridge Family, her work with her late husband, the legendary harmonica player and singer-songwriter Chris Wilson and sons Fenn Wilson and George Carroll Wilson, and her decades of broadcasting and music writing experience, is set to release her new solo album NQR&B on July 5 through Cheersquad Records & Tapes. Sarah delivers a preview of the record in the form of the album's first single, "Diamond in the Mine", which is out today.
Sarah is an individual who simply oozes musicality: a gorgeous, soulful singer, a beautiful instrumentalist, and someone who has an intrinsic understanding of all manner of roots music. Her songs chime with sincerity and deal largely with her experiences as a teacher, mother, wife, political animal and touring musician, and NQR&B is a collection which celebrates her great loves and her singular life.
First single "Diamond in the Mine", a sweet country blues swamper set to a spare but funky backbeat, sets the tone perfectly for the honest reflection and compassion sewn into the songs. The song - about which Sarah says "She means me (;" - speaks powerfully of loss and how difficult it can be to push on through life.
lyrics
She wakes early, wet-eyed and weary/Looks out across the miles of empty bed
She remembers happy mornings ruined by the silly things she said
She feels helpless, losing power/As the world turns to ashes in her hands
Tries to mend rusty fences and spread the seeds of healing ‘cross the land
Take the time to consider the big picture when comfort’s hard to find
You’re a child of the universe, a flaming star, a diamond in the mine
She puts her shoulder to the wheel/Lifts her share and tried to do what’s right
But in the hours spent alone, her worried mind keeps her up all night
Someone to hold her hand, someone who sees her clearly
Someone to understand, someone who loves her dearly’s what she needs
Take the time…
